A chromatid is one half of a replicated chromosome. Prior to cell division, chromosomes are copied and identical chromosome copies join together at their centromeres. Each strand of one of these chromosomes is a chromatid. Joined chromatids are known as sister chromatids. Once linked sister chromatids separate from one another during anaphase of mitosis, each is known as a daughter chromosome. Chromatids A chromatid is one of two strands of a copied chromosome.Chromatids that are joined together at their centromeres are called sister chromatids. These chromatids are genetically identical.Chromatids are formed in both the cellular division processes of mitosis and meiosis. Chromatid Formation Chromatids are produced from chromatin fibers during both meiosis and mitosis. Chromatin is composed of DNA and skeletal proteins and is called a nucleosome when wrapped around these proteins in sequence. Even more tightly wound nucleosomes are called chromatin fibers. Chromatin condenses DNA enough to fit within a cells nucleus. Condensed chromatin fibers form chromosomes. Before replication, a chromosome appears as a single-stranded chromatid. After replication, a chromosome appears in an X-shape. Chromosomes are first replicated and their sister chromatids are then separated during cell division to ensure that each daughter cell receives the appropriate number of chromosomes. Chromatids in Mitosis When it is time for a cell to replicate, the cell cycle begins. Before the mitosis phase of the cycle, the cell undergoes a period of growth called interphase where it replicates its DNA and organelles to prepare for division. The stages that follow interphase are listed chronologically below. Prophase: Replicated chromatin fibers form chromosomes. Each replicated chromosome consists of two sister chromatids. Chromosome centromeres serve as a place of attachment for spindle fibers during cell division.Metaphase: Chromatin becomes even more condensed and sister chromatids line up along the mid-region of the cell or the metaphase plate.Anaphase: Sister chromatids are separated and pulled toward opposite ends of the cell by spindle fibers.Telophase: Each separated chromatid is known as a daughter chromosome and each daughter chromosome is enveloped in its own nucleus. Two distinct but identical daughter cells are produced from these nuclei following the division of the cytoplasm known as cytokinesis. Chromatids in Meiosis Meiosis is a two-part cell division process carried out by sex cells. This process is similar to mitosis in that it consists of prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase stages. During meiosis, however, cells go through the stages twice. Because of this, sister chromatids do not separate until anaphase II of meiosis. After cytokinesis at the end of meiosis II,Ã four haploid daughter cells, containing half the number of chromosomes of the original cell, are produced. Dorling Kindersley / Getty Images Nondisjunction It is vital that chromosomes separate correctly during cell division. Any failure of homologous chromosomes or chromatids to separate correctly is known as nondisjunction. Nondisjunction occurs during anaphase of mitosis or either stage of meiosis. Half of the resulting daughter cells from nondisjunction have too many chromosomes and the other half have none at all. The consequences of having either too many or not enough chromosomes are often serious or even fatal. Down syndrome is an example of nondisjunction resulting from an extra chromosome and Turner syndrome is an example of nondisjunction resulting from a missing whole or partial sex chromosome. Sister Chromatid Exchange When sister chromatids are in close proximity to one another during cell division, the exchange of genetic material can occur. This process is known as sister-chromatid exchange or SCE. During SCE, DNA material is swapped as portions of chromatids are broken and rebuilt. A low level of material exchange is typically considered safe, but when the exchange reaches excessive levels, it can be hazardous to the individual.

The dispute of God extends past just who He is. It extends into what He values, what He believes, and even to what He loves. However, these seemingly complex questions are redundant. The answers to all these questions revolve around one thing: us. We create who He is. We determine what He values. We determine what He believes. We determine whom He loves. We created God. What we should truly be asking is: Does one need God? The necessity of God is discussed at length in Friedrich Nietzscheââ¬â¢s book, ââ¬Å"On the Genealogy of Morals,â⬠wherein he states that since we create morals our own morals, God is too a social construct, who is different for every person. Because standards for morality vary by person, the enforcement of a single, divinely ordained law or code or set of values over all humans generalizes and subsequently overlooks individual experiences. Subsequently, we do not need Him, because we are using God as a figurehead to pass judgment upon ourselves. Nietzsche claims that we use God as a social crutch in order to give ourselves purpose in this world because we fear having a meaningless life. Nietzscheââ¬â¢s ideas are a constant theme throughout Chuck Palahniukââ¬â¢s novel, ââ¬Å"Fight Club,â⬠wherein we witness the transition of God from being oneââ¬â¢s father to the character Tyler Durden. This anthropomorphized God causes destruction and discontent and illustrates the struggle people have with living a meaningless life. Both Nietzsche and Palahniuk argue and illustrate that since God

Abstract People of different cultures, including immigrants of today seem to differ from past generations in that they seek to retain many of their cultural values and are less interested in becoming homogenized within the U. S. culture. This distinctness can create a potentially complex situation for both the client and therapist who may differ substantially in their own cultural values. For successful therapy to take place, it is important for therapists to be culturally sensitive of clients and avoid stereotyping.Stereotyping is detrimental to the client/therapist relationship. Therefore, to minimize the risk of misunderstanding and misinterpreting our clients we should acknowledge the influence of culture and respond respectfully to these cultural differences, values, and beliefs. This paper will define counseling and diversity and its disparities such as stereotypes and how they can be influenced from a counselorââ¬â¢s perspective. This paper is an expression of my current thinking regarding a theoretical perspective of counseling and diversity. We will write a custom essay sample on Counseling and Diversity or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page IntroductionCounseling is a conversational process that can be instrumental in the development of skills that help those effectively confront and cope with uncertainties and conflicts. Counseling is for folks who are courageously facing their fears, who want more from their life, who want to expand their lives and achieve goals both personally and professionally. Itââ¬â¢s a relationship that builds Confidence (Edwards, 2009 p90). Counseling is where a professional will give advice, opinions or direction based on what the patient has discussed with them. In some ways, a counselor could almost be seen as a guide.Counseling is done in an informal and comfortable environment where the patient is free to discuss what bothers them. They are free to express their feelings and emotions to someone they know are listening to them. Itââ¬â¢s easy for people who donââ¬â¢t really know what counseling is to not realize there are many different types of counseling for different problems. Counseling is very much like therapy (Radcliff, 2009 p93) in that there are individual areas in which counseling focuses on. It is not simply one broad thing that one person covers. There are actually different subjects that different counselors will specialize in.There is marriage counseling, family counseling, career counseling, mental health counseling, substance abuse counseling, debt counseling, child development counseling and grief counseling, to name a few. Diversity means differences such as different religious beliefs, different cultural traditions, music, art, dancing etc. (Patchell Broussard,2009,p88) In the context of society and culture, diversity is usually mentioned in discussing multicultural societies. What do people from other cultures contribute when they migrate and become part of a new society. Why should these different traditions and customs be valued? They enrich a society because they allow people to experience different thinking processes, to see that there is more than one way of approaching issues or living ones life. Why is diversity important? Educating managers and staff on how to work effectively in a diverse environment helps the University prevent discrimination and promote inclusiveness. There is evidence that managing a diverse work force well can contribute to increased staff retention and productivity (Ogans, 2009 p91).It can enhance the organizations responsiveness to an increasingly diverse world of customers, improve relations with the surrounding community, increase the organizations ability to cope with change, and expand the creativity of the organization. In addition to contributing to these business goals, diversity can contribute to goals unique to the University as a public institution, such as increased accessibility and accountability to all res idents of the state. Cultural Norms and Differences Cultural norms are behavior patterns that are typical of specific groups.

Japans Past is Still the Ghost of the Present Free Online Research Papers ââ¬Å"Haunting Past, Haunting Future-Why Japanââ¬â¢s ghost-like Past is still the Ghost of the Presentâ⬠Japan committed numerous atrocities and crimes during WWII. Such crimes have occurred during Japanââ¬â¢s period of imperialism. Explicit examples of these include: mass killings, torture of POWââ¬â¢s, and looting. These examples have been accounted in events; indeed, the Nanking Massacre has been portrayed as the most notorious example. Ever since Japanââ¬â¢s surrender, compensation and official apologies have been made; however, during the past few years, Japanââ¬â¢s government seemed like they were trying to cover up their crimes. Additionally, the Yasukuni Shrine, which enshrines 14 class-A war criminals, has been regarded as a national monument; Prime ministers Koizumi and Abe have made controversial visits that have angered foreign neighbors. Despite the fact that there seems to be evidence of increasing amiability, the outlook for future relations is unpredictable as it seems. However, there is a chance that one can look forward to a better relationship between foreign nations- Japan and its neighbors. Japan has committed warcrimes for which they have tried to apologise for, but their denials are reflective of curr ent events, as well the outlook for future relationships. The severity of Japanese war crimes reached a pinnacle during the late 1930ââ¬â¢s. As mentioned earlier, there was a mass execution of solders and innocent civilians, including women and young children. The death toll amounted to around 6 million murders. Such examples include the Manila Massacre (Philippines) and the Sook Ching Massacre (Singapore). The estimated death toll between these two countries is around 150,000. In China alone, 3.9 million lives were lost as a result of Japanese invasions. However, the controversial focus involves the Nanking Massacre from 1937-1938. Even the death toll cited has yielded radically different estimations; the number ranged from 8,000-430,000. Within the atrocities, Japanese soldiers have also conducted cruel scientific experiments on Chinaââ¬â¢s POWs. ââ¬Å"Victims were subjected to vivisection without anesthesia, amputations, and were used to test biological weapons, among other experimentsâ⬠¦in some victims, animal blood was injected into their bodiesâ⬠. As a result, there were 200,000 innocent lives lost due to bubonic plague, cholera, etc. Acts of cannibalism were later carried out in the 1940ââ¬â¢s, while evidences of use of comfort women were prevalent, although the cannibalism reports and prostitution can only be proved through accounts from eyewitnesses. Ever since Japanââ¬â¢s surrender to the war, trials of war criminals followed. Some of the war criminals were convicted with death/life sentences, while some were not even given a trial. After the war trials, official apologies have been made; however, ââ¬Å"they official apologies were widely viewed as inadequate by many of the survivors of s uch crimes and/or the families of dead victimsâ⬠¦many people aggrievedâ⬠¦that no apologies has been issued for particular acts of andâ⬠¦the Japanese government has merely expressed ââ¬Ëregretââ¬â¢ or remorse.â⬠Basically, China and Korea want Japan to fully recognize the magnitude of the crimes Japan has caused. Japan has since made compensations to the POWs, but many have stated that Japan has never had the responsibility to compensate each of the victims. During the last 10 years till the present, Japan is still in constant debate between its neighbors. Visiting the Yasukuni shrine has become more prevalent and frequent during Junchiro Koizumiââ¬Ës term as Japanââ¬â¢s Prime Minister. The visits have been deemed as controversial because Japanââ¬â¢s leader has been visiting the enshrined souls of those who have been responsible of most of the atrocities. But Japanese people claim that he does not frequent it enough to pay respects. It has been known that Japanââ¬â¢s foreign nations are not quite thrilled with the shrineââ¬â¢s symbolism of Japanââ¬â¢s past military aggression. Japanââ¬â¢s indignant refusal to ââ¬Å"face all of the factsâ⬠has been prevalent recently. In 2001, Japanââ¬â¢s neighbors were not content with the fact that Japan had not made an official apology, recounting and confessing all the atrocities that they have committed. Furthermore, textbooks and historic material taught in Japanese sch ools have changed Japanââ¬â¢s purported role as an aggressor during WII. Events, including the Nanking Massacre (or ââ¬Å"incidentâ⬠, as the Japanese prefer to call it), comfort women, and various other war crimes, have been ignored. Until now, this has yet to be changed. Koizumiââ¬â¢s successor, Shinzo Abe, renounced the issue that women had been forced into sexual slavery. He claimed that there was no tangible evidence that would prove such events had happened during WWII. He is currently trying to alleviate tensions between Japanââ¬â¢s neighbours. It is true that he is a committed visitor, but it does not seem to have a profound effect on China (like it had been years ago). For example, Chinese Prime minister Wen Jiabo has visited Japan to formalize a new cabinet level dialogue on economic co-operation, suggesting more economic opportunities for Japan. On 10th May 07, Beijing avoided direct criticism of Abe when he made his offering to the Shrine. Their purpose was to adopt a more forward looking approach with relations with Japan. A da y later, Japan has responded, citing that they would want to keep improving relations as well, sharing a goal in building common interests. Japanââ¬â¢s indignant refusal to embrace their faults regarding the war crimes has generated debates and controversy, but apparently this issue is starting to change, with Japan/China relations improving. Ergo, the relationship will improve, but because Japan still avoids and denies some of the atrocities, it is evident that Japanââ¬â¢s ghost like past foreshadows the present, as well as the future. Stock option backdating - Essay Example Backdating can take on several meanings. The most culpable form of backdating involves "intentionally changing the date used to set an option's exercise price to one on which the stock's price was at a low" (Ellsworth et al., 2006). This form of backdating was abetted by the relatively lax legislation before the Sarbanes-Oxley Act was enacted in 2002. The Sarbanese-Oxley Act mandated that stock options be filed within 2 days after they are granted (FindLaw, 2002), mitigating the backdating problem. Before the Sarbanese-Oxley Act came into effect, option grants were reported using Form 5 which primary use is for the disclosure of "the transactions and holdings of directors, officers, and beneficial owners of registered companies" (Securities and Exchange Commission, n.d.). Furthermore, the form is required to be filed only "on or before the 45th day after the end of the issuer's fiscal year" (Securities and Exchange Commission, n.d.). This essentially means that if the stock options w ere granted early in the fiscal year, investors would not come to know of them until almost 1 year later, giving more leeway for insiders to manipulate the date on which the exercise price was established. Most of the 63 companies involved in stock option backdating "relate to a roughly six-year period prior to the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation" (Grant and Nuttall, 2006). ... Such company actions and policies include sloppy documentation, delays in the grant approval process, and the wrong interpretation of APB Opinion No. 25 Accounting for Stock Issued to Employees (Ellsworth et al., 2006). Summary of Statement No. 123 Accounting for Stock Issued to Employees prescribes that the intrinsic value or fair value based method of accounting be used for the valuation of stock options (Financial Accounting Standards Board, 1995). Most companies continue with the intrinsic value based method of accounting (Ellsworth et al., 2006). Under the intrinsic value based method, "compensation cost is the excess, if any, of the quoted market price of the stock at grant date or other measurement date over the amount an employee must pay to acquire the stock" (Financial Accounting Standards Board, 1995). If company actions are efficient, the measurement date would be the same as the grant date, and no compensation cost is recorded. More often than not, due to procedures such as the signing of the resolution by the directors, the measurement date would be at a later date than the grant date. If the price of the underlying stock has risen over the period between the measurement date and the grant date, the stock option is in the money and the difference should be recognized as compensation expense. Backdating occurs when companies, whether intentionally or unintentionally, choose to use the price of the underlying stock on the grant date as the basis for measuring the compensation cost. An example of the above form of backdating of stock options is Michaels Stores Inc., which understated compensation expenses by as much as $60 million between 1990 and 2001 (Bulkeley, 2006; Maremont, 2006). Michaels
